From 1st - 2nd March 2022, Principles for Peace (P4P) and Peace Direct will hold a two-day conversation on ‘Peace Structures and Local Ownership’.

Join us for an interactive discussion on how to maximise national level peace structures to support the local owernship of peace processes.

Peace processes are often guided by comprehensive peace agreements, which outline a roadmap towards peace. A key component of these processes is the establishment of national level peace structures and mechanisms, such as dialogues and peace commissions, that support the transition from conflict to peace and bridge peacebuilding efforts across society.

These structures are key to building foundations of trust and accountability, yet they are often not well integrated with peace processes at the grassroots level.

To explore this, we are inviting anyone with direct experience working with national-level peace structures to be part of the conversation. This is the third in a series of consultations exploring local ownership in peace processes.

Deadline to register: Monday 28th February

Why is this conversation important?

There is broad agreement on the need to foster local ownership in peace processes. Yet, putting this into practice has been difficult and uneven. We need to rethink how peace structures engage local peacebuilders and influence the larger peace process.

Share your perspectives, exchange ideas and help reimagine local ownership in peace processes

What will be discussed?

Over the course of the two days, key questions will include:

  • What national peace structures and mechanisms exist in your context? How, if at all, are they linking up with community-based peace processes?
  • To what extent do these peace structures foster the participation of local communities?
  • How are international peacebuilding structures influencing national-level peace structures
  • What broader systems change is needed to increase local ownership in peace processes?

Through this discussion, we hope to learn from practical real-life examples and good practices. We will encourage participants to share their own experiences and examples as much as possible.

How will it work?

This conversation will take place on Peace Direct’s Platform4Dialogue discussion platform between 1st – 2nd March 2022.

The consultation will be available in English and French. Participants who speak Spanish and Arabic will be able to use the automatic translation function.
